Of course if one had a car, they could simply drive out to Hochosterwitz but having only the 100 lb. bikes we had to opt for the train! But I will always be happy when there's a reason to go out the back door of our apartment and cross the road to Krumpendorf's train station (it is honestly that close)- Course that means that you have to REALLY love listening to trains go by- but these are the electric European trains that just whiz by, most of them just in the background adding to the mystic of this area. So we caught the train here and rode about 45 minutes to a little town called Launsdorf, Austria- and jumped off during our 30 second stop. As we approached the stop- the castle Hochosterwitz appeared out our window in between the trees and European buildings- like a magical fairyland. This thing couldn't look more enchanted if it tried. Here we are freshly off the train and just beginning our hike towards the mountain- as you approach it of course it just gets larger and larger in your view- they say it can be seen for up to 15 miles away- we were only about a mile or so away when we got off the train. We went early though, because the weather has been in the 90s (or 30 as they keep noting around here).
