ST. FRANCIS of ASSISI

THIS was really cool. I had read it was in one of the churches in Florence but had forgotten- Then Carol found it while we were wandering around in the back of the church- It is one of the tunics of St. Francis of Assisi!! Turns out that Assisi, Italy is not very far at all from Florence- and everyone that has been there says we should be going. But you can't do it all I guess (next time)- St. Francis is known for so many things but what is most familiar is the tradition of this familiar brown robe worn by the Franciscan monks. The Peace Prayer of St. Francis apparently dates from the early part of this century, and its author is unknown. It was found in Normandy in 1915, written on the back of a holy card of St. Francis, from which the name comes. Other histories ascribe it to a time before St. Francis, and some believe he indeed did write it, but the above is the most commonly accepted history of the prayer. It is familiar, "Lord make me an instrument of your peace;...."

Here is a shot of tunic we saw today.
