This one really blew me away. Look at that 1/2 statue that's still left in there of some pagan god-
unreal that's been there for 2000 years.
Actually we learned that by the 1700s this entire area had been covered over with silt and 17 centuries of the earth covering itself up. I really had to do a little digging to figure out why ancient ruins are always underground- I mean if that's the case, then the earth were walking on isn't the same one that they walked on 2000 years ago- turns out that's true! If you think about trees falling, and leaves and silt and all that stuff that keeps coming down and covering the ground- and old rubble- I guess it really isn't hard to believe that 2000 years ago, everyone was actually walking on earth that was about 20-30 feet lower than what we walk on now. They keep pointing out in these guide books that when you come across from ancient Roman times- notice that if its still visible- there is a slope down to it from the street level that we're on today- its SO noticeable in the Forum because its all dug out- but even like the Pantheon right across from our hotel- its much lower in the ground than say our hotel which was probably built 1500 years later.
